NTU Dorothy Cheung 2011 Championships Results and Motions

The annual Dorothy Cheung Inter-Tertiary Debating Championship was recently hosted by the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) last weekend (2-3 April 2011).  A squad from NTU G comprised of Jayesh Kannan, Arun Shankar, and Anindita Pal took home the coveted trophy by triumphing over an Ox-Ridge team comprised of  Scott Tan, Kenneth Kang, and Bryan Chan.


NTU G, debating Opposition on the motion "THW charge the Vatican with crimes against humanity for its stance on condoms in Africa" won by a 6-1 split during the Final.

Motions for each of the rounds are as follows (click the motion to go to the video)

Round 1. The opiate of the masses 
(i)   THBT the US should become a Christian state.
(ii)  THW require that students in all schools (secular, religious, public, private, etc.) learn the beliefs of people of all major faiths and those with no faith at all.
(iii) THW abolish religious exemptions to its laws.

(i)   THW grant "human" rights to robotic and computerised beings with sapience and emotion
(ii)  THW keep ET secret from the public
(iii)  THW never create super-soldiers

(i)   THW legislate the personal lives of individuals on the basis of social disgust
(ii)  THW elect its Supreme Court justices
(iii)  THW refuse to obey unjust or unethical laws

Round 4: You knew this was coming... 

(i)   THW leave Libya to the Arab League
(ii)   THBT the West should overthrow Gadaffi
(iii)  THW partition Libya de facto

Quarter-finals: Keedz, drugz are baaad! 
(i)   THW not ban athletes who consume marijuana from participation in sports
(ii)  THW monitor mothers who smoke or drink during their pregnancy
(iii)  THW execute convicted drug traffickers
 
(i)   THW mandate that employees be given a majority stake in the companies they work for
(ii)   THBT sovereign wealth funds should not invest in high-risk investment
(iii)  THW compel companies to provide their employees medical benefits

(i)   THW preserve Mubarak (Note: See video for context)
(ii)  THW prosecute the bankers of war criminals and criminals against humanity as their accomplices
(iii)  THW charge the Vatican with crimes against humanity for its stance on condoms in Africa
