2011 NSDC Championships - Aceh Team Edges over Bali in Close Final
Team Aceh triumphed over tournament favorite Team Bali in a very close match at last night's 2011 National Schools Debating Championships (2011 NSDC). Debating the motion THBT Establishing Democracy through Military Force is Justifiable, the team from SMA Model Bangsa took 5 of the 9 adjudication votes from the SMA 4 Denpasar team, which recently won the ALSA UI (high school) debates.
The NSDC has been sponsored annually by the Indonesian Ministry of Education, in a program which started in 2000 (then called the High School Debating Camp). The top speakers from the NSDC are included in a shortlist of candidates from which Indonesia's representatives to the World Schools Debating Championships are chosen.
Congratulations to both teams, and to all the speakers who made it to the top speaker spots!

2011 NUEDC Qualifying Rounds - Wilayah 3
Attendees at yesterday's Wilayah 3 briefing at the Kopertis 3 Cililitan offices were informed that the 3 preliminary rounds of the qualifying rounds will deploy 3 of the following 5 motions:
1. THBT underaged marriage should be legalised as long as it is in the name of religion.
2. THBT parents who are proven to have neglected their children's health should be penalised.
3. THBT Indonesia should implement is own national security act.
4. THW grant amnesty for dictators who step down peacefully.
5. THW not require a victim's consent in prosecuting cases of domestic violence.
The qualifying rounds are scheduled to happen this week, beginning the 26th of the month.
Note: We thank our reader, Ges.a, for pointing out the discrepancy in dates. The Qualifying Rounds for Wilayah 3 of the 2011 NUEDC are indeed from the 26th to the 28th of May, 2011.
To answer Ges.a's query - 'qualifying rounds' is a descriptive phrase referring to the initial phase of the NUEDC selection process. Not all institutions get a free pass to the national level competition, and must go through a regional selection process, where the emerging 8 teams per Wilayah (or, as was the case in the past 2 years, per Kopertis) proceed to the nationals.

2011 ALSA UI Updates - UI reclaims ALSA title

with a team from BINUS INTERNATIONAL (Ravina Alimchandani, Annisa Kusumawardhani Sabran, and Jaran Walia) opposing the motion before a home crowd from EDS UI and other UI alumni gathered at the
Faculty of Law complex at the UI Depok campus last night. It was BIPEDS' first appearance at an ALSA grand final, and its third appearance at a grand final in as many tournaments for 2011.
![]() |

EDS UI got the adjudicators' nod which, due to conflicts and due to a number of breaking adjudicators not being available to attend the grand final, was whittled down to a select but competent number.
The victory marks EDS UI's first tournament take for the year, after earlier grand final appearances in tournaments held during the first quarter of 2011. With this recent victory, EDS UI reclaimed the ALSA title, which was won last year by the Bandung Institute of Technology (Institut Teknologi Bandung).
The Top 3 Best Speakers of the Varsity Level Debates were also announced. They are: #1 - Satrio Pratama (Universitas Diponegoro), #2 - Adlini Ilma Ghaisany (Universitas Indonesia), and in joint third - Astri Agustina (Universitas Gajah Mada) and Roderick Sibarani (Universitas Indonesia).
This ends debateIndonesia's coverage of the 2011 ALSA UI. Special thanks go to Steven, Rajkumar Sangtani and Boby Andika Ruitang for the photographs, and live updates!

16 high school teams which made it to the Octos of the 2011 ALSA UI High School debate competition trooped back to Depok this morning, for the start of the elimination rounds.

Where'd they go? A much-thinned out crowd of high school teams gather today at the Faculty of Law auditorium. |
Soon after the conclusion of the Octos, the motions for the Quarterfinals were released; they were pre-announced motions about 'technology':
M1 - THW ban any electronic device application which (sic) offends sexual preference.
M2 - TH regrets the US court's verdict on Google's online library plans.
M3 - THBT Japan should give up on nuclear technology. ---------------

2011 English Fiesta Updates - Printed Tabs, Octos Motions
With the haze of last night's Break Night Party slowly fading, teams which made it to the Octofinals of the 2011 English Fiesta were given access to the printed tabs of yesterday's freshly concluded preliminary rounds.

That was FAST! English Fiesta A-Core releases tabs less than 12 hours after the break announcement. |
Motions for the Octofinals were about public policy:
M1 - TH rejects unpaid internships.
M2 - THBT politicians convicted of crimes should receive harsher punishment than ordinary citizens.
M3 - TH rejects citizen-made legislations.

ALSA UI Octofinalists - Due to a late night announcement from the ALSA Varsity Chief Adj, the list appearing below has been updated, and rankings will be different from last night's announcement at the ALSA UI Cultural Night. The change in rankings was due to an error committed in inputting ITB's results for one round. Initially, it was recorded that ITB lost the round, whilst it was otherwise. Teams whose names are in blue are those affected by the reshuffling
