2011 BIND Updates - Recruitment for Subsidised Ind Adjes Extended
In a short discussion early this morning, Invi Atmanegara (2011 BIND Convener) confirmed that after further deliberation, the 2011 BIND Organising Committee has decided to accommodate requests from various institutions to extend the 15th June 2011 deadline for prospective subsidised adjudicator candidates.
She also informed debateIndonesia that the Organising Committee will post the announcement shortly in various debate fora, along with an explanation of the BIND's blind review system to be employed for the selection process, and the differentiation between subsidised independent adjudicators and non-subsidised independent adjudicators.
debateIndonesia readers can read the post below:
ANNOUNCEMENT: RECRUITMENT FOR 2011 BIND SUBSIDISED ADJUDICATORS
EXTENDED TO 15TH JULY 2011
Hello Asia!
We’ve received requests which have (1) requested to extend the deadline for submitting CVs for subsidised independent adjudicators, (2) sought clarification re: the difference between subsidized adjudicators and independent adjudicators, and (3) asked about the selection process.
After some deliberation, the Organising Committee has decided to extend the recruitment period for subsidised independent adjudicators, to allow interested parties more time to submit their respective CVs. We understand that at present, some of you are adjusting to post-UADC life - facing final exams, or final projects, or preparing for graduation.
The new deadline is 15th July 2011, at 2359 WIB (GMT+7). All interested candidates should send their CVs to BIPEDS.Indonesia@gmail.com.
Replies to Queries
1. What’s the difference between subsidized independent adjudicators and independent adjudicators?
The BIND Organising Committee is holding open & competitive recruitment for subsidised independent adjudicators. The need to conduct open & competitive recruitment is because successful candidates will be flown-in to Jakarta for free, waiver of registration fees, and will receive free accommodations, in exchange for their active contribution to raise the quality of adjudication at the 2011 BIND. We want to reach out to experienced adjudicators in the region to safeguard the integrity & competence of BIND’s adjudication pool.
Three slots have been allocated for subsidised independent adjudicators.
Each of the successful candidates will be a person known for his/her probity & sense of fairness, with a proven performance record at a BP tournament of a(n) national, regional or international scale as a(n) debater and/or adjudicator. Breaking experience at a BP tournament on a regional or international scale will be an advantage.
To date, we have received applications from Australia, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore.
In contrast, the phrase “Independent Adjudicators” applies to the following individuals:
Individuals who wish to participate in the workshop and adjudicate at the BIND who: (1) have graduated from their respective institutions, and (2) are currently not actively affiliated with a particular debate club or society (either as a training alumni or as a coach, assistant coach, or any position which has a duty to train teams) OR come from an institution not registered at BIND. Moreover, they are required to pay all tournament-related fees, and arrange for their own accommodations, but can avail of the special rates we have arranged with either of the 3 accommodation sites recommended in our web page.
These independent adjudicators are neither subsidised, nor are they considered N1 adjudicators. To avoid confusion, we will henceforth refer to these individuals as “non-subsidised independent adjudicators”.
In the interest of fairness, both subsidised and non-subsidised are still required to sit the adjudication accreditation exam which N1 adjudicators are required to take.
2. How will the candidates be selected?
The candidates will be screened by a Selection Committee comprised of members of the A-Core and selected members of the Organising Committee.
We strictly follow (and have been doing so since BIND's inception) a blind review system in any BIND-related assessment; i.e., the Selection Committee will not have access to the name or the school of the candidates, but will receive only the credentials of the candidates and their respective candidate numbers.
We believe this blind review system (akin to the anonymous peer review), which BIND has employed for the past years for our adjudicator accreditation exams, emphasises merit, and minimises the 'halo effect'.
Apologies for this rather long-ish message. We just wanted to sort out any points that needed clarification.
We do look forward to hearing from everyone interested to be subsidized independent adjudicators!
Sincerely,
Invi Atmanegara

2011 BIND - Registration Closes, Search for Independent Adjs Opens
In an email sent earlier today, the 2011 BIND Organising Committee officially opened its search for 3 independent adjudicators throughout the region, to fortify its Adjudication Core.
The 2011 BIND has attracted more than 50 institutions from Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, India, Bangladesh, and Indonesia. Registration closed yesterday, 27 May 2011 at 2359hrs (GMT+7). A tournament cap of 80 teams was set, but that was reportedly exceeded, and over 100 teams have signed up for the tournament scheduled for 13th to 16th September 2011.
Deadline for the submission of CVs for independent adjudicators is 15th June 2011. Interested parties should submit their CVs to bipeds.indonesia@ gmail.com
debateIndonesia has reposted the message in its entirety below. -----------------
Dear Fellow Debate Enthusiasts,
Hope this message finds you well. On behalf of the Organising Committee of the 2011 BIND, I wish to inform you that we have opened slots for individuals from the region who will serve as independent adjudicators.
Very briefly, BIND is a 3-year old tournament which uses British Parliamentary as its format. It is run by the BINUS INTERNATIONAL Pool of English Debaters (BIPEDS).
BIND adheres to international best practices, and starting 2010, we began fortifying our Adj Core by inviting well-respected adjudicators from the region and from the international circuit to serve as our DCAs. (Please visit our Testimonials page to hear what Will Jones, Can Okar, Sam Natale & Julia Bowes have to say about BIND 2010)
This year, we have the privilege of having 2 members of the Manila Worlds Adj Core as our DCAs (Lucinda David and Tim Mooney). TJ (Assumption University - ABP CA, Assumption Worlds Convener. Botswana Worlds breaking adj) will also serve as a DCA.
Our CA this year is Raj Sangtani (BIPEDS - Quarterfinalist of Asian BP 2009, 2nd EFL Best Speaker of ABP 2009, WUPID 2010 Grandfinal Adjudicator).
To date, over 50 institutions from Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, India, Bangladesh, the Philippines and Indonesia have signed up for the 2011 BIND, and all slots in the main list have been taken up.
Given the regional scale of the tournament, the Organising Committee decided it best to strengthen our adj pool through the presence of independent adjudicators. We have allocated 3 slots for such persons.
Each of the successful candidates will be a person known for his/her probity & sense of fairness, with a proven performance record at a BP tournament of a(n) national, regional or international scale as a debater and/or adjudicator. Breaking experience at a BP tournament on a regional or international scale will be an advantage. S/he will be flown in to Jakarta at the Organising Committee's expense and will have free accommodations on all days of the tournament (13 to 16th September 2011)
Interested candidates can submit their CVs to bipeds.indonesia@ gmail.com on or before 15th June 2011.
You can also send queries to the email address above.
Lastly, kindly feel free to circulate/re-post this message to the various debate fora which you are members of, to spread the word and widen our search for independent adjudicators for this year's BIND.
Looking forward to hearing from you!

2011 Macau UADC concludes
It was a superb run for Indonesia as a country at the Macau UADC's Closing Dinner tonight, which honoured Bakrie University - on its maiden appearance - first as the EFL Champion, and second as producing the tournament's Best EFL Speaker.
![]() |
All in the family. Members of the Indonesian contingent pose for posterity. |
The London School of Public Relations, another first-timer at the UADC, also made it to the grand final.
Other semi-finalists were the Institut Pertanian Bogor (Bogor Institute of Agriculture) and the BINUS INTERNATIONAL Pool of English Debaters (BIPEDS).
All 4 debate institutions are considered to be relative newcomers in the Indonesian debate scene, having been established or recently rejuvenated in the past 4 years or so.
It is hoped that this is indicative of a more even distribution of debate talent in Indonesia, and will generate even more support for teams attending international tournaments - a trend that can only help raise the bar for Indonesian debate as a whole.
Congratulations to the teams, the best speakers, and their respective coaches!
Many, many thanks to Andrew W Sadeli (BIPEDS) and Jozef Thenu (LSPR) for their valuable updates and photos!
See you at debateIndonesia's coverage of the 2012 MMU UADC!

2011 Macau UADC - Quarters motions, Semis teams
The crowd at the 2011 Macau UADC waited with bated breath at the University of Macau Cultural Centre last night as the results of the quarters were announced by the A-Core:
By a 4-1 split, UPD1 won over DLSU1
By a 4-1 split, UPD triumphed over NTU1
By a split decision, NUS2 defeated Ateneo 1
By a unanimous decision, NUS1 won over UT Mara 1
The draw for the semis will be a treat to all debate enthusiasts:
NUS1 v NUS2
UPD1 v UPD2
with the grand final match-up an uncontestably high-calibre battle between NUS and UPD.
In the EFL category, Bakrie University, BIPEDS, LSPR and IPB won their respective matches against opponents from Indonesia, China, Japan, and Thailand to secure an all-Indonesian semis and finals.
Bakrie will face IPB, whilst BIPEDS will battle LSPR in the semis today.
Here were the motions for the quarters:
M1 - THW make the raising of business and labour standards a pre-requisite for developmental aid.
M2 - THW punish financial institutions who fail to maintain liquidity in situations of market fluctuation.
M3 - THW discard tourism-reliant economic strategies.
Thanks to Andrew W Sadeli (BIPEDS) for the updates, and Jozef Thenu (LSPR) for the motions!

Faculty of Law complex at the UI Depok campus last night. It was BIPEDS' first appearance at an ALSA grand final, and its third appearance at a grand final in as many tournaments for 2011.

EDS UI got the adjudicators' nod which, due to conflicts and due to a number of breaking adjudicators not being available to attend the grand final, was whittled down to a select but competent number.
The victory marks EDS UI's first tournament take for the year, after earlier grand final appearances in tournaments held during the first quarter of 2011. With this recent victory, EDS UI reclaimed the ALSA title, which was won last year by the Bandung Institute of Technology (Institut Teknologi Bandung).
The Top 3 Best Speakers of the Varsity Level Debates were also announced. They are: #1 - Satrio Pratama (Universitas Diponegoro), #2 - Adlini Ilma Ghaisany (Universitas Indonesia), and in joint third - Astri Agustina (Universitas Gajah Mada) and Roderick Sibarani (Universitas Indonesia).
This ends debateIndonesia's coverage of the 2011 ALSA UI. Special thanks go to Steven, Rajkumar Sangtani and Boby Andika Ruitang for the photographs, and live updates!
