2011 Macau UADC concludes

It was a superb run for Indonesia as a country at the Macau UADC's Closing Dinner tonight,which  honoured Bakrie University - on its maiden appearance - first as the EFL Champion, and second as producing the tournament's Best EFL Speaker.

The London School of Public Relations, another first-timer at the UADC, also made it to the grand final.

Other semi-finalists were the Institut Pertanian Bogor (Bogor Institute of Agriculture) and the BINUS INTERNATIONAL Pool of English Debaters (BIPEDS).

All 4 debate institutions are considered to be relative newcomers in the Indonesian debate scene, having been established or recently rejuvenated in the past 4 years or so.

It is hoped that this is indicative of a more even distribution of debate talent in Indonesia, and will generate even more support for teams attending international tournaments - a trend that can only help raise the bar for Indonesian debate as a whole.

Congratulations to the teams, the best speakers, and their respective coaches!

2011 Macau UADC - Quarters motions, Semis teams

The crowd at the 2011 Macau UADC waited with bated breath at the University of Macau Cultural Centre last night as the results of the quarters were announced by the A-Core:

By a 4-1 split, UPD1 won over DLSU1

By a 4-1 split, UPD triumphed over NTU1

By a split decision, NUS2 defeated Ateneo 1

By a unanimous decision, NUS1 won over UT Mara 1

The draw for the semis will be a treat to all debate enthusiasts:

NUS1 v NUS2

UPD1 v UPD2

with the grand final match-up an uncontestably high-calibre battle between NUS and UPD.

In the EFL category, Bakrie University, BIPEDS, LSPR and IPB won their respective matches against opponents from Indonesia, China, Japan, and Thailand to secure an all-Indonesian semis and finals. 

Bakrie will face IPB, whilst BIPEDS will battle LSPR in the semis today.

Here were the motions for the quarters: 

M1 - THW make the raising of business and labour standards a pre-requisite for developmental aid.

M2 - THW punish financial institutions who fail to maintain liquidity in situations of market fluctuation.

M3 - THW discard tourism-reliant economic strategies.

Gambling money that feeds the hungry and scantily clad girls & guys in casinos are just a few of the images conjured by this morning's motions for Round 3, at the start of the third day of the 2011 Macau UADC.

Sex and Money. Nothing like a mix of these two to rouse sleepy heads to wakefulness.

Participants were also informed that interested parties who want to join the Masters' Round can start signing up.  Just bring 2 more pals willing and able to stir up a crowd to fits of laughter.  That's it - no pressure, really :)

2011 Macau UADC - Day 3 - EFL Criteria, Schedule Out

The Adjudication Core released the schedule and criteria for teams which have lodged applications to be classified as English as a Foreign Language teams, and hence making them eligible to break into the EFL semifinal. 

The interviews will be conducted by members of the Adjudication Core.

The issue of what measures to use in order to gauge one's English fluency has been a long, outstanding one in the regional and international debate circuits.  Whilst it is easy to determine the third criteria, the first and second ones are largely dependent on personal disclosures, for which an honesty system is employed and which remains subjective.  

In the past, suggestions to use empirical measures such as TOEFL or IELTS scores have been turned down due to the expense involved.

2011 Macau UADC - Round 2 Motions, Delays Continue

Privacy and Intellectual Property.  Round 2 motions were an interesting mix of privacy and IP issues.

19th May 2011

Long delays between Rounds 1 and 2 threatened Day 2 as technical difficulties continued to hound the Tab Room which delayed the start of Round 2 and eventually forced the hand of the organisers and the A-Core to postpone Round 3 to today.

It was revealed that the reason for the technical difficulties, earlier thought of to be due to the increase in the point spread margin from 12 points to 15 points, was because the itab program being used was designed to run for a tournament cap 100 teams. There are currently 102 competing teams registered at the 2011 Macau UADC.

The Tab Room had to get in touch with the programmer in the United States to resolve the matter, which required a modification of the program's source code. 

It was announced that teams will either have to debate 4 rounds today or 3 rounds tomorrow.

2011 Macau UADC - Tab Room crash delays Round 1

Tab Room Crash Delays Start of Rounds

 

A technical difficulty experienced in the Tabulation Room has caused a delay  in Round 1 of the 2011 Macau UADC (originally slated for the morning of 18th May 2011). 

An increase in the maximum point margin from 12 points to 15 points has been identified as the culprit, but the Tabulation Team is working full throttle to resolve the matter.  

The Organising Committee however has assured participants that Rounds 1 and 2 will push through in the afternoon, whilst Round 3 will be held in the early evening. 

In preparation for the rounds later in the day, participants have been served lunch. 

Other Developments: 

1. Two senior adjudicators are due to fly in today.  Vipul Nanda (DCA for South Asia) and Logandran Balavijendran (subsidised adjudicator) experienced conflicts in their schedules due to exams and work-related reasons, respectively.

2. Three N=1 adjudicators were not able to make it to Macao for the following reasons: (i) The passport of one was blacklisted, (ii) One was rejected entry, and (iii) a death in the family. 

3. The unofficial count of teams puts the total participating teams at 106.

2011 Macau UADC - Day 2

Thud, thud, thud. Nothing beats that skip in your step, that slightly faster heart beat on the first day of a tournament!

As teams slowly assembled at the University of Macau Cultural Centre, you feel the tension build as excruciating second after second moves towards the start of Rounds 1 to 3 of the 2011 Macau UADC.

Steady now, my heart.  Debaters slowly fill up the debaters' hall.

The preliminary stage will have 8 rounds and, as is slowly evolving to become a custom with the now-expanded tournament, a total of 24 teams will break into the main round, with teams ranked 1-8 securing slots to the Octofinals, whilst 9-24 will battle it out in an extra round called the pre-Octos.

The list of EFL teams is due for release today, and of all the teams, only the top 4 shall proceed to the semi-final.

2011 Macau UADC - Day 1

Teams have breakfasted, and made way to the University of Macau campus grounds to mark the first day of the 2011 Macau UADC. 

It's the waiting that kills. Early birds wait as the other participants make their way to the Briefing Hall.

The Tournament & Adjudication Briefing is the first order of the day, starting at 845am (Macau time.  That's one hour ahead of WIB)

Here we go!. Nicole Ng, 2011 Macau UADC Convener briefs the crowd.

followed by the Test Debate and Adjudication Test at 1000am.  

Adjudication Briefing.  Ah Young (DCA) delivers the briefing to debaters.

This will be followed by Lunch at 12nn, and then the Pre-Council Meeting at 2pm. 

Test Debate. THW grant heads of state the right to an 'Internet Kill' switch.

The Welcoming Dinner - the first of the formal social events for the tournament - is scheduled to commence at 7pm.
