2011 NSDC Championships - Aceh Team Edges over Bali in Close Final

Team Aceh triumphed over tournament favorite Team Bali in a very close match at last night's 2011 National Schools Debating Championships (2011 NSDC).  Debating the motion THBT Establishing Democracy through Military Force is Justifiable, the team from SMA Model Bangsa took 5 of the 9 adjudication votes from the SMA 4 Denpasar team, which recently won the ALSA UI (high school) debates.

The NSDC has been sponsored annually by the Indonesian Ministry of Education, in a program which started in 2000 (then called the High School Debating Camp).  The top speakers from the NSDC are included in a shortlist of candidates from which Indonesia's representatives to the World Schools Debating Championships are chosen.

Congratulations to both teams, and to all the speakers who made it to the top speaker spots!

A new resource for the WSDC format

One challenge for a World Schools Debating Championship (WSDC) coach from our part of the world is, other than Simon Quinn's book on the format, there is little resource available on the web to help a novice coach direct the training of a team going to the WSDC.

One reason for this is most WSDC training is derived from experience, and not the one-off sort of experience, but repeated exposure to the tournament, its nuances, its rules, - not to mention an enduring love affair with debate and oratory.
Enter Samuel Myat San, a "debate addict" (going by his own words), who started as a debater for the Anglo-Chinese Junior College Debate Team and the Singapore National debate team. He eventually became the vice-president for the Harvard University Speech and Parliamentary Debate Society, which allowed him to focus on novice Harvard debaters and adjudicators.

Samuel has culled together his wealth of experience as a debater, adjudicator and coach to produce Debateable! , a free internet resource which features debate topics such as: "the set up", "case construction", "the arguments" and more.

Readers are also treated to topics on debate strategies such as "debate research", "the psychological dimension of debate", and "training tips".

NOTA BENE: The information on the website is free, and Samuel requests that the web site contents not be held out for sale.

Here's to more resources like this on the internet!
