What's happening on debateIndonesia for May

The entire Asian debate community traipses to the tune of the "Merry Month of May", as the days close in on the 2nd United Asians Debating Championships.

debateIndonesia is all set for this event with our May lineup! Here's a glimpse of what lies in store for debateIndonesia readers:

Bitten - To mark the 15th year since an Indonesian team made its debut on the All Asians debate circuit, debateIndonesia gets in touch with Patsy Widakuswara, Perry Harahap, and Achmad Sukarsono and asks them to reminisce the joy of competing on behalf of Indonesia for the very first time. Photos and cameo appearances included

Matter Loaded - Our guest contributor for May is Patsy Widakuswara, a respected TV journalist for Voice of America who is now based in Washington, DC.  This month, she shares one of her favourite resources for US-based issues.

Tournament of the Month - No prizes for guessing that our TOTM for May is the 2nd UADC.  Get to know the ins and outs of organising a tournament of regional proportions, spanning all corners of Asia! Nicole Ng (Botswana Worlds Octofinalist, ESL Category) shares her own and her committee's experience with debateIndonesia readers.

Movers and Shakers - Meet Marc Castrodes, an ex-debater from the Mindanao State University (Marawi City, Lanao del Sur, Mindanao, Philippines) who is now a successful litigator, public speaking trainer, TV show host, entrepreneur, and politician.  His is not your typical tale of 'rural boy makes it big in the city' .  Read how debating changed his life, and find out how debate can change yours

One of Us - The University of Macau is hosting the 2nd UADC, and is a growing contender in the Asian and Australasian scene.  Learn more about and compare notes with a fellow comrade-in-arms.

debateIndonesia is also delighted to announce that we will be running a special column called 'Coach's Corner' where guest coaches answer training questions from our readers.

Also, catch the latest updates as they happen at ALSA UI and English Fiesta this weekend. debateIndonesia's volunteers and live reporters will cover both tournaments.

The 2011 English Fiesta is our TOTM

At a time when debate tournaments seem to sprout like mushrooms, debaters long for tournaments with quality adjudication and which bear the stamp of longevity.  Learn how English Fiesta (EF) adjudication core members and organisers intend to accomplish both by reading our Tournament of the Month (TOTM).

Meet Fitria, Wincen, Tracy, Nico, Ganda & Sume - the FHUI Jessup  Moot Court team.  Whilst Indonesian parliamentary debate teams continue to dream of making it to the Top 32 of the Worlds, this year's Philip Jessup Moot Court team of the University of Indonesia Faculty of Law achieved this in mooting's equivalent of the Worlds.

They're debateIndonesia's featured team in One of Us.

Alanda Kariza is this month's Mover & Shaker

She published her first book, "Mint Chocolate Chips" at the tender age of 14, and recently released "Vice Versa".  She was Indonesia's teen ambassador at the Global Changemakers Guildford Forum in 2009, Media Indonesia's youngest 40 Most Influential People in 2010, and CosmoGirl's youngest finalist in 2006.

Nothing seems to stop Alanda Kariza, debateIndonesia's Mover & Shaker for April 2011, from charging on!

Who's been Bitten (by the debate bug) in Semarang?

Nestled in the idyllic town of Semarang, Central Java, the University of Diponegoro Debating Forum (UDF) has become an emerging debate force in recent years, having won the 2010 National Universities English Debating Championships and sending a team to compete at the Botswana Worlds.  Find out more about UDF as Buna Rizal answers questions from the debateIndonesia staff.

What's new on debateIndonesia

While it's been a quiet few days in Indonesia, we here have been working furiously, hammering out plans.  Here are the latest updates for debateIndonesia readers:

1. Change of Name
Readers will notice that we have recently changed names.  No reason to wonder -  this is all in line with our plans to migrate this blog of ours to a website, which our top Information Systems man is currently developing. The website will bear debateIndonesia, and it is for this reason that we thought it best to streamline the trade name, copyright, and Twitter account with the URL.

2. Tournaments to be Covered
debateIndonesia is pleased to announce that through its network of volunteers and on-the-ground reporters, it will be able to provide readers with up-to-date developments for the following tournaments:

(a) 2011 ALSA UI (Depok, Indonesia)
(b) 10th ILF-UMM English Fiesta (Malang, Indonesia)
(c) 2011 Macau UADC (Macau, China)
(d) 2011 Korea Australs (Seoul, South Korea)
(e) 2011 JOVED (Yogyakarta, Indonesia)
(f)  2011-2012 De La Salle Worlds (Manila, Philippines)

3. Volunteering Opportunities at debateIndonesia
Indonesia is the world's largest archipelago, spanning 1/6th of the globe's circumference with its 13,000 (approx) islands.  It is our dream here at debateIndonesia to cover all major debate centres, and debate & public speaking events in Indonesia whether that be in Sumatera, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Papua, or Java, and regardless if those events involve high school, polytechnic, diploma, or university students.

This is why we welcome volunteers from all over Indonesia to send in their features, and updates about debate tournaments happening in their respective communities.
If you are interested to volunteer and be one of our live tournament reporters, or if you're feeling inspired by your muse and want to contribute an article, drop us a line at: editorial.board.idebate@gmail.com.

4. More Stories to Come
May is UADC month! We will be running special articles about the host university and feature UADC as Tournament of the Month.

debateIndonesia will then go to Makassar for the month of June!

Manila Worlds participants would want to grab a copy of debateIndonesia's special 'Manila Survival Tips' Issue this December 2011.

Make sure you never miss these!  Sign up for our free subscription.  Just send us an email at our email address below, and we'll add you to our database.

Yes, it's that simple!
