3rd Intramuros IVs Opens Registration

The Third Intramuros IVs officially opened the first phase of registration last May 9 and will run up to May 28.  The Philippine-based tournament is unique in that it is the only tournament in the country which is co-hosted by 4 universities located within the remnants of the famed Spanish fortress (Mapua Institute of Technology, Colegio de San Juan de Letran, Lyceum of the Philippines University, and the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila). It is open to both institutional and composite teams.

Last year, composite teams from Mahidol University (Thailand), NUS (Singapore), and NTU (Singapore) participated, indicating that the tournament is drawing regional following.

Interested teams may register via the tournament website, or may do so by sending email to debate.intraivs@gmail.com.   Those sending email should provide the number of teams and adjes, and contact person name and details)

Queries can be sent to the same email address and should be addressed to Gabriel Floresca (Communications and Registration Director).

Sali na!

LSIV 2011 - Registration extended

Gabriel Pavico, the Convener of the La Salle Intervarsity 2011, announced to the Asian debate community that registration has been extended to 18 April 2011 (today!) instead of 31 March 2011.  The decision to extend registration was apparently due to a demand from several institutions to extend the registration period.

The last day for the payment of registration fees will be 22nd April 2011.

Promoted as the 'pre-UADC tournament you do not want to miss', the LSIV boasts of a strong adjudication core, which include Lucinda David (Manila Worlds CA), Gica Mangahas (UADC Macau CA), Azrul Izzam (UADC Macau DCA), and Phra Chainarong Sangranoi ("LP").

Biggest, Oldest 3on3 Debate Tournament in the Philippines kicks off today

The University of the Philippines Debate Society (UP Debate Society) and the Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI), the largest newspaper in the country, have once again teamed up to bring the Philippine Intercollegiate Debating Championship 2011 (PIDC 2011).

The PIDC is the longest-running and biggest (in terms of scope and participation) 3on3 debate tournament in the country, annually attracting more than 300 participants and affiliates from every top notch debate institution in the country.  With debate tradition deeply entrenched in the Filipino psyche, rounds at the PIDC have been described as 'fierce' , each round never flagging in quality and competitiveness.  As such, most Philippine teams consider it good training ground for regional 3on3 tournaments, particularly the United Asian Debating Championships (UADC).

This year's venue will be at the University of the Philippines Diliman campus grounds, where participants will get the chance to ride on the iconic UP Ikot jeepney to get from one building to another. Opening ceremonies will be at the University Theatre, whilst break night will be at Blacklight. The Closing & Awards ceremony will be at the Quezon City Sports Complex.

PIDC 2011 will also be home for intelligent discussion through an issue forum featuring the topic “How secular is the Philippines?” This issue forum will be open to the public.

The PIDC 2011 A-core this year has internationally-renowned debater Neha Prakash from the National University of Singapore in the adjudication core and internationally-renowned adjudicator Tasneem Elias joining the pool of adjudicators.

The PIDC 2011 starts today, and will run up to the 11th of April 2011.

So if you're in Manila, and are in search of some high voltage intellectual stimulation, why not drop by UP Diliman, and see what debating is all about!
